Keep Your Heat Pump in Top Shape with Regular Maintenance
March 5, 2015
As with any heating and cooling system, the key to yourheat pump's efficient and reliable service lies in regular maintenance. Poor maintenance can reduce your heat pump's efficiency by as much as 25 percent. Here are some maintenance procedures that can improve your unit's efficiency:
Changing Filters: Filter changes should be performed on a monthly basis. Dust and dirt in your system can reduce airflow, making your system less efficient. Dust and dirt can also cause damage to your compressor.
Cleaning Outdoor Coils: If your outdoor coils appear to be dirty, your system should be turned off and cleaned. If there's debris or vegetation around your outdoor unit, make sure to remove it.
Cleaning and Repairing Supply Registers: Along with removing dust and dirt, bent fins should be straightened. These fins need to be straight for the unit to perform properly.
Professional Servicing: You should have your heat pump serviced by an HVAC professional at least once a year. Your HVAC professional should also handle the following tasks:
- Filter, blower and indoor coil inspection
- Verify refrigerant levels and check for refrigerant leaks
- Inspect electrical terminals
- Tighten and clean electrical terminals where necessary
- Verify that the thermostat is functioning correctly
