Lower Your Energy Costs This Fall With These Tips
October 14, 2018
You may believe that your HVAC system is operating as efficiently as it can get. What you may not know is that you can lower energy costs by doing a few simple things, and thereby save some serious money on your future energy bills. Although there is nothing really fancy here, if you follow these tips, you'll not only lower your energy costs but you'll also be more comfortable this fall and winter.
Change Your Air Furnace Filter
Check your filter once per month, and if you can no longer see through it, put in a new one. As the air filter gets dirty, it begins to impede air flow. That makes your furnace fan work harder, and a harder-working fan places more stress on parts and uses more energy.
Let The Sunshine In
Open those sun-facing curtains and let the sun provide a little solar heat inside of your home. If the added natural heat keeps your furnace from running as long as usual, you'll be saving dollars on your energy bill. Make sure you close the drapes or curtains after the sun goes down, to provide a layer of insulation.
Insulate Draft Windows And Doors
Drafty windows allow heat to escape from your home at the same time that drafts are coming inside. Use a do-it-yourself plastic window covering kit and seal those drafts out. Eventually, consider investing in Energy Star qualified low-e windows.
Use A Programmable Thermostat
If you don't have a programmable thermostat, get one. You can automatically program the heat setting to a lower temperature when you aren't home, which can save up to 10 percent on your energy bill each month.
Seal Air Leaks
Door jambs, utility penetrations, attic doors, and exterior cracks and crevices can be sealed with caulk and weatherstripping to keep the cold out and the heat in.
Schedule Your Furnace Tune-Up
Furnace tune-ups do two main things. They keep your furnace running efficiently and safely, and they also identify issues before they become big problems.
These simple tips will help you avoid high energy bills and keep you comfortable all heating season.
