Simple Ways to Conserve Water in Your Home

April 12, 2016

When you are working on making your home more energy efficient to save money, don't leave out water conservation. Although your water bill might be lower than your energy bill, making simple changes in how you use water can add up. In return, you will help conserve a vital resource and keep more money in your pocket. Here are ways to conserve water in your home.

Use Aerators on All Faucets
These create a stronger spray by pushing the water through a special screen. Air is added to the water, and this makes low-flow faucets perform similarly to old-style faucets but with much less water waste.

Have Leaks Fixed Promptly
Those dripping pipes or faucets might not seem like big water wasters, but it adds up quickly. If you know your way around plumbing, then you can tackle some of these repairs yourself. When in doubt, never hesitate to call on your plumber.

Use Low-Flow Showerheads
There are several ways to conserve water in the shower. You could limit your time there, or you could shut the water off when lathering your skin or shampooing your hair. However, for many people, showering is a relaxing experience that they don't want to rush through. If you have installed a low-flow showerhead, you will still use less water and save money.

Upgrade to an Energy Star-Certified Washing Machine
When you upgrade to a new high-efficiency washing machine, you'll be using nearly half of the water that your old machine used. Look for the Energy Star label to ensure you get the most efficient model available. You'll save on your electricity bill as well.

Insulate Your Hot Water Pipes
When you insulate your pipes, you will reduce heat loss. Many people do this for the energy savings and to prevent pipes from freezing, but another benefit is that it conserves water. This is because you won't have to let the water run from your faucets as long as you wait for it to turn hot.
