What Certifications Should Your HVAC Contractor Have?

October 20, 2015

At some point in time, you will need a technician to repair or replace your HVAC system. Nowadays, these systems have complex mechanics and advanced electronics. An unqualified contractor lacks the required expertise and niche training to handle these systems. Such a contractor can damage your system, making you lose time and money. Ensure your would-be contractor has the following HVAC contractor certifications.

Licensing When a contractor is licensed, it means that they have received professional training, provided proof of insurance and bonding, and operate lawfully and in compliance with local and state laws. Verify your contractor's license is up-to-date.

NATE Certification North American Technician Excellence (NATE) tests and certifies technicians in one or more specialty areas such as air distribution, air conditioning, gas heating, and heat pumps. NATE tests are rigorous and knowledge-based. An NATE-certified technician can carry out quality installation, repair, and maintenance.

EPA 608 Certification The EPA requires people who work with systems or containers that store refrigerants to have the EPA 608 certification. It consists of four types of certifications. To gain certification, contractors are required to pass a written exam.

HVAC Excellence HVAC Excellence offers several certifications including HEAT (Heating, Electrical, Air Conditioning Technology), HEAT Plus, professional-level, and master-specialist certifications. The certifications require technicians to demonstrate their skills and pass exams.

Additional Certifications There are additional certifications that show that contractors have attained specific competencies. For instance, SAVE (System Adjustment and Verified Efficiency) certification is awarded to technicians who have been trained in energy-efficient installation and measurement. Manufacturers of HVAC equipment also offer certifications to dealers if they meet certain criteria. If your contractor has the above HVAC contractor certifications, you can have great peace of mind because your system will get the quality service it requires.
