In Des Moines' continental climate, higher-efficiency heating and cooling equipment can really help control your energy costs. Although higher-efficiency systems cost more to purchase than less efficient models, HVAC rebates make them more affordable.
How Rebates Save You Money
Some government agencies, utility providers, and equipment manufacturers offer HVAC rebates to encourage homeowners to invest in high-efficiency equipment. Rebates give you a refund on part of the equipment's purchase price. Mail-in rebates are the most common type offered. Just fill out a form, mail it to the rebate provider, and you'll receive a check in the mail. Most come with an expiration date, often of three or six months after purchase, so make sure you send yours in on time.
In most cases, heating or cooling equipment must reach certain efficiency standards to qualify for the rebate. These standards are defined by the provider of the rebate. Conditions can change so check with the rebate provider to make sure the equipment you're considering will qualify.
Finding Rebates Near You
For its customers all around Iowa, the electric company MidAmerican Energy offers rebates on room and central air conditioners, heat pumps, and many other electrical appliances. Upgrade your air conditioner and you could get $675 to $1,050 back in the mail. A new heat pump can qualify too.
This program also offers incentives for services that save you energy, including routine HVAC maintenance, home energy audits, and improvements in insulation and air sealing for better weatherization. When your home is well weatherized, you can buy a smaller HVAC system, which saves you money on purchase costs in addition to lowering your heating and cooling bills.
Customers of Interstate Power and Light (Alliant Energy) can benefit from rebates on central air conditioners, air-source (standard) and geothermal heat pumps, programmable thermostats, and tank water heaters. Rebates for adding insulation and air sealing, and for installing a thermal door are also available.
