SEER stands for the seasonal energy efficiency ratio, which is calculated by the cooling output during a typical cool season divided by the total electric energy input during the same period. The higher the unit’s SEER rating, the more energy efficient it is.
HSPF stands for the heating seasonal performance factor and is used specifically for heat pumps. This score is a ratio of heat output over the heating season to watt-hours of electricity used. The higher the unit’s HSPF rating, the more energy efficient it is.
